Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

As for Ahmad’s (1) report: when the proof had overwhelmed the man, he conceded, “He can indeed speak (2), but His speech is created.” We replied (3): “Likewise, the children of Adam possess created speech; yet by claiming that Allah’s speech is created you have likened Allah to His creation. According to your doctrine, there was a moment when Allah did not speak until He created speech, just as the children of Adam do not speak until speech is created for them. Thus (4) you have combined kufr (disbelief) with tashbih (likening the Creator to the creation). Exalted is Allah—majestic is His praise—far above such a description.

Rather, we say that Allah—glorious is His praise—has always been speaking whenever He wills. We do not say there was (5) a time when He did not speak until He created [speech] (6); nor do we say there was (7) a time when He lacked knowledge until He created and then knew; nor do we say there was (8) a time when He lacked power until He created power for Himself; nor do we say there was (9) a time when He had no light until He created light for Himself; nor do we say there was (10) a time when He possessed no majesty until He created majesty for Himself.

This shows that what the Jahmi intended by this statement is that Allah might begin to speak after previously not speaking, by means of created speech that He brings into being within His own essence or as something existing on its own—so that this claim differs from his earlier assertion that Allah creates something which then expresses Him.

He even said, “You have likened Him to idols that neither speak nor move.”
