Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

—from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.

They then hold fast to the Book and the Sunnah, as Allah says:

“If you dispute about anything, refer it back to Allah and the Messenger” (1).

They regard it as obligatory to follow those who have gone before from the Imams of the religion, and not to introduce into their faith anything for which Allah has granted no permission.

They affirm that Allah, exalted is He, will come on the Day of Resurrection, just as He has said:

“And your Lord will come, and the angels, rank upon rank” (2);

and that Allah draws near to His creation however He wills, as He said (3):

“We are nearer to him than his jugular vein” (4).

They maintain that the ‘Id prayer, the Friday prayer, and the regular congregational prayer are to be performed behind every imam, whether righteous or sinful. They affirm wiping over leather socks as a sunnah, holding it (5) to be valid for both residents and travellers.

They uphold the obligation of jihad against the polytheists from the time Allah (6) sent His Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—until the last contingent that will fight the Antichrist, and even thereafter.

They consider it proper to pray for the rectitude of the Muslim rulers and not to revolt against them.

“He descends during the first third of the night to the lowest heaven and says: ‘Is there anyone seeking forgiveness? Anyone repenting? Anyone asking? Anyone supplicating?’ until dawn breaks.” Sahih Muslim 1/523, Book of the Prayer of Travelers and Its Shortening, Chapter: Encouragement for Supplication and Remembrance at the End of the Night and Its Answer. Hadith 172. Muslim also narrates under this chapter several traditions with varying wordings concerning the Lord’s (Glorified and Exalted) descent to the lowest heaven. Likewise Ibn Abi ‘Asim in Kitāb al-Sunnah 2:216–223 and Ibn Khuzaymah in Kitāb al-Tawḥīd, pp. 125–136. (1) Surah an-Nisa’, verse 59. (2) Surah al-Fajr, verse 22. (3) In the original manuscript, qāla (he said) appears as shā’a (he willed), a scribal error. (4) Surah Qaf, verse 16. (5) The original reads yarawna (they see); this is confirmed by mss. S, T, and al-Maqālāt. (6) The addition within quotation marks is taken from al-Maqālāt.
