Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

[the rest of the ḥadīth] (1).

Likewise, in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim it is narrated from Abū Hurayrah that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said:

“Whoever, when evening comes, says: ‘I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created,’” (2)

—then he related the remainder of the report, and similar narrations are found elsewhere.

Imām Aḥmad and others said: It is impermissible to say, “I seek refuge for you by the heaven, or the mountains, or the prophets, or the angels, or the Throne, or the earth, or by anything that Allah has created.” Refuge may be sought only in Allah or in His words.

2683. It was also transmitted with a different wording from Khawla, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: “When any of you settles in a dwelling, let him say: ‘I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created,’ for nothing will harm him until he departs from it.” Sahih Muslim 4:2080–2081; Book of Remembrance and Supplication, chapter on seeking refuge from a bad decree and inevitable misfortune, hadiths 54–55. (1) The text within quotation marks is an addition in manuscripts S and T. (2) Muslim also narrated from Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: “O Messenger of Allah, I was bitten by a scorpion last night; what should I do?” He replied: “Had you said when you went to sleep: ‘I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created,’ it would not have harmed you.” Sahih Muslim 4:2081; Book of Remembrance and Supplication, chapter on seeking refuge and escaping misfortune, hadith 550. Imam Ahmad also recorded it in his Musnad with wording similar to that of the Shaykh: “Whoever says three times at night: ‘I seek refuge in the words…’ ” 2:290. Ibn Khuzaymah (may Allah have mercy on him) says in his book at-Tawhid wa Ithbat Sifat al-Rabb (Monotheism and the Affirmation of the Lord’s Attributes), pp. 165–166, after citing hadiths showing that the Prophet (peace be upon him) sought refuge in the perfect words of Allah: “Is it not well understood—O people of understanding—that it is impermissible for the Prophet (peace be upon him) to command seeking refuge in a creation of Allah against the evil of His creation? Have you ever heard a scholar permit saying, ‘I seek refuge in the Kaʿbah from the evil of Allah’s creation’? Or, ‘I seek refuge in al-Safa and al-Marwa’? Or, ‘I seek refuge in ʿArafat and Mina from the evil of what Allah has created’? No Muslim who knows the religion of Allah would utter or allow such speech. It is impossible to seek refuge in a created being from the evil of a created being.”
