Abu Shaykh al-Asbahani relates in his work Kitab al-Sunnah (1). He says: Among the material my grandfather—may Allah have mercy on him—authorized me to transmit (2) is the following: Ishaq ibn Rahuyah said, “Allah—blessed and exalted is He—has portrayed Himself in His Book (3) with attributes that spare all created beings from describing Him with anything other than what He has described of Himself. He has set them forth succinctly in His Book, and the Prophet—may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him—only clarified the intent of Allah, blessed and exalted.
Allah says in His Book, when mentioning Jesus son of Mary:
‘You know what is within myself, and I do not know what is within Yourself.’ (4)
He says in His decisive Book:
‘Then all who are in the heavens and on earth will fall unconscious, except those whom Allah wills.’ (5)
and:
‘The whole earth will be in His grasp on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand.’ (6)
He also says:
‘Rather, both His hands are outstretched.’ (7)
and:
‘The Hand of Allah is over their hands.’ (8)
and:
‘I created you with My two hands.’ (9)
He further says in many verses:
‘He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.’ (10)
and:
‘That you may be fashioned under My Eye.’ (11)
Every attribute with which Allah has described Himself—whether among those we have cited that are in the Quran, or among those we have not cited—is exactly as He has stated. What is required of the servants is submission and worship on that basis; we do not negate a single attribute with which Allah has described Himself (12)
