charging your Lord with any imperfection in what He has attributed to Himself, nor should you burden yourself (1) with assigning to that which He has conveyed to you (2) any precise measure.
Whatever your soul rejects and you do not find mentioned in the Book of your Lord, nor in the hadith (3) of your Prophet among the descriptions of your Lord, do not impose upon yourself (4) knowledge of it by sheer intellect; do not voice it with your tongue, but keep silent about it just as the Lord kept silent concerning it with regard to Himself. Your striving to know what He has not described of (5) Himself is on a par with denying what He has described of Himself. Therefore, just as you deem momentous the rejection (6) by the deniers of what He has described (7) of Himself, so too deem momentous the presumption of those who venture to describe Him with what He has not described.
By Allah, the Muslims are truly honored who recognize what is right—and by their recognition it is acknowledged (8)—and who repudiate what is wrong—and by their repudiation it is repudiated. They listen (9) to what Allah has attributed to Himself in His Book and to the like of it that reaches them (10) from His Prophet. No Muslim heart (12) has ever grown sick from mentioning and naming the Lord with this (11), nor does any believer burden himself with gauging its extent or with naming the Lord by anything else.
