And, according to what has reached us, the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said:
“Truly Allah laughs at your poverty, your despair, and at how swiftly you are answered.”
A Bedouin man asked him, “Does our Lord really laugh?”
He replied, “Yes.”
The man said, “Then we shall never be deprived of good from a Lord who laughs.”(1)
= “wa-yu’thiroona ‘ala anfusihim…,” the verse, vol. 6/59–60, in Kitāb al-Tafsīr, Sūrah al-Ḥashr, chapter “wa-yu’thiroona ‘ala anfusihim….”
Al-Albānī states in his book Mukhtaṣar al-Uluww by al-Dhahabī (p. 146): “It was narrated by al-Bukhārī and by Ibn Abī ‘Āṣim in his Sunan (no. 570), and also by Muslim—except that Muslim does not mention the laughter, nor do any of these reports mention Thābit ibn Qays; rather, Muslim names him Abū Ṭalḥah, a man of the Anṣār.”
I comment: The ḥadīth is transmitted through multiple chains, likely reflecting different versions of the event. Ibn Ḥajar records in Fatḥ al-Bārī 14/271, in the Book of the Virtues of the Anṣār, chapter on the verse “wa-yu’thiroona ‘ala anfusihim…,” that a man of the Anṣār passed by another for three days without finding anything with which to break his fast, remaining fasting until an Anṣārī named Thābit ibn Qays took notice. He adds that this does not preclude variation both in the act of hospitality toward the guest and in the circumstances of the revelation.
Al-Suyūṭī relates in ad-Durr al-Manthūr 6/195: “It was reported by Masaddad in his Musnad, by Ibn Abī al-Dunyā in his book Qirā’ al-Ḍa‘īf, and by Ibn al-Mundhir on the authority of Abū al-Mutawakkil al-Nājī, that a Muslim man remained fasting for three days… until when Thābit came before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he said: ‘O Thābit, yesterday Allah was astonished by you and your guest,’ and then the verse ‘wa-yu’thiroona ‘ala anfusihim…’ was revealed.”
(1) The ḥadīth appears with different wording in Ibn Mājah’s Sunan 1/64 (Al-Muqaddimah, chapter “On the Objections of the Jahmīyah,” hadith no. 281) on the authority of Abū Ruzayn, who reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Our Lord laughed at the despair of His servants and turned toward someone else.” I asked, “O Messenger of Allah, does the Lord laugh?” He replied, “Yes.” I said, “Then we shall never lack a Lord who laughs in kindness.”
Imam Aḥmad also narrates it in his Musnad (4/11–12) with the same wording as Ibn Mājah. Muḥammad Fu’ād ‘Abd al-Bāqī—editor of Sunan Ibn Mājah—adds on p. 64: “In the Zawā’id: Waki‘ is mentioned by Ibn Ḥibbān in al-Thiqāt, and the rest of its narrators are accepted by Muslim.” The Waki‘ in question is Waki‘ ibn Ḥadas, who transmitted it from his uncle Abū Ruzayn.
