The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said:
“Hell will not be full until the Almighty, the Compeller, places His Foot in it. Then it will say, ‘Enough, enough!’ and its sections will draw together.”(1)
He also said to Thabit ibn Qays:
“Allah laughed at what you did for your guest last night.”(2)
= In Sahih Muslim 1:163, Book of Faith, Chapter “Knowing the Way to the Vision,” Hadith 299. Ibn Abi Asim also records it in al-Sunnah (various chains and wordings) 1:193–201, chapter “What Has Been Reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) Regarding How We Will See Our Lord in the Hereafter.”
(1) This hadith is transmitted in different wordings from Abu Hurayrah and others. Al-Bukhari narrates from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“…As for the Fire, it does not fill until He places His foot in it, and it cries out, ‘Enough, enough,’ whereupon it is filled and its parts draw together. And Allah, exalted is He, wrongs none of His creatures…”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 6:48, Book of Tafsir, Tafsir of Sura Qaf.)
He records it with another wording in his Sahih (8:167, Book of Tawhid, on the words of Allah {And He is the Mighty, the Wise} … {Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of Might, above what they describe} … {To Allah belongs all might and to His Messenger}): Anas reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“[The Fire] continues to cast into it, saying, ‘Is there any more?’ until the Lord of the Worlds places His foot in it; then its parts draw together and it says, ‘Enough, enough, by Your might and honor….’”

(2) The discussion in the Mukhtasar concludes here; the remainder is covered in al-Fatwa al-Hamawiyya and al-Mukhtar from Kitab al-Ibanah by Ibn Batta, plate 182 and following. Al-Bukhari narrates from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“…Allah laughed that night—or marveled at your deeds—so He revealed: {And they give preference to others over themselves, even though they are in need. And whoever is shielded from the stinginess of his soul—they are the successful} (al-Hashr 59:9).”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 4:226, Book of the Virtues of the Ansar, chapter “And They Give Preference Over Themselves…”).
