in praising and exalting them; and had that been something widely known in their learning (1) and clearly recognized as part of their character, (2) it would have spread far and wide from them, and they would have become famous for it—[for it, just as they became famous] (3) for the Qur’an and the transmitted reports. Likewise, the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—said: “Our Lord descends to the lowest heaven” (4) and, in their understanding,
(1) In at-Tamhīd: ‘ʿamaluhum’.

(3) The text enclosed in brackets is an addition found in manuscripts S and T. In at-Tamhīd it reads: “walishahharū bihi kamā shahharū.”
(4) A portion of the hadith recorded by al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and others from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), in which the Prophet (sallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: “Our Lord, Blessed and Exalted, descends each night to the lowest heaven when the last third of the night remains, saying: ‘Whoever calls Me, I will respond; whoever asks Me, I will give; whoever seeks My forgiveness, I will forgive.’” See: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2/47 (Kitāb al-Tahajjud, bāb al-duʿāʾ wa-al-ṣalāt min ākhir al-layl); 7/149 (Kitāb al-Duʿawāt, bāb al-duʿāʾ niṣf al-layl); Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1/521 (Kitāb Ṣalāt al-Musāfirīn wa-Qaṣrihā, bāb al-targhīb fī al-duʿāʾ wa-al-dhikr fī ākhir al-layl). The belief that the Lord descends in a manner befitting His Majesty, without asking “how” (bilā kayfa), is the position of the Salaf (may Allah have mercy on them), and the reports are authentic and beyond doubt. Several Companions transmitted it; the theologians (mutakallimīn) denied this attribute, as is their custom regarding divine names and attributes. The Imams of Islam refuted them and exposed the frailty of their arguments. For further discussion see: al-Dārimī, al-Radd ʿalā al-Jahmiyya, pp. 38–53; Ibn Khuzaymah, al-Tawḥīd, pp. 126–136; al-ʿAjūrī, al-Sharīʿah, pp. 306–314; Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr, al-Tamhīd 7/128 ff.; among many others. Shaykh al-Islām composed a dedicated treatise on this hadith in response to a question concerning two disputants—one affirming it, the other denying it—which addresses any potential objection or confusion.
