“It may be that your Lord will raise you to a Praiseworthy Station.” (1) He explained: “He will seat him with Him upon the Throne.”
Imām Abū Bakr Ibn Abī ʿĀṣim also records in al-Sunnah (2):
“Fudayl b. Sahl narrated to us; ʿAmr b. Ṭalḥah al-Qannād (3) narrated to us; Asbaṭ b. Naṣr narrated to us, from Simāk, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that he (4) said about the verse, ‘And indeed he saw him on another occasion’ (5): ‘The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—saw his Lord.’ A man thereupon said to him, ‘But has not Allah said, “No…’”
His work Zilāl al-Jannah fī Takhrīj al-Sunnah, printed in the same source (same volume and page), has a weak and interrupted chain of transmission, and al-Layth is known to mix up his narrations. It was also transmitted by Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī in his Tafsīr (vol. 15, p. 145) with the same chain.
As for al-maqām al-maḥmūd (the Praiseworthy Station), there is disagreement among scholars. Ibn Jarīr’s view—that it signifies Allah seating the Prophet with Him on the Throne—is weak. Although this opinion is attributed to Mujāhid, Ibn Jarīr himself held that it cannot be supported by any report or by rational analysis, since no report from the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), his companions, or the Successors implies it. Rational reflection likewise led early Muslims to differ over its meaning (Tafsīr 15:147).
He preferred the view adopted by the majority of scholars, namely that al-maqām al-maḥmūd denotes the station on the Day of Resurrection in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) will be raised to intercede for people, so that by his Lord’s mercy they are relieved from the severity of that day. He then cites the hadith narrated by Abū Hurayrah: the Messenger of Allah said, “It may be that your Lord will raise you to a praiseworthy station.” When asked its meaning, he replied, “It is intercession” (Tafsīr 15:143–145).

Al-Albānī states in Zilāl al-Jannah fī Takhrīj al-Sunnah—printed within Ibn Abī ‘Āṣim’s Al-Sunnah (vol. 1, p. 189): “Its chain is weak and its narrators are reliable, except Asbāt ibn Naṣr, who is often in error.”
This hadith was also recorded by Ibn Jarīr al-Ṭabarī in his Tafsīr (vol. 27, p. 52).
