He lost consciousness, and {when he regained his senses he said, “Glory be to You! I repent to You”} (1) for having asked to behold You (2), {and I am the first of the believers} (1). He explained: “I am the first among the Children of Israel to believe in You.”
Al-Ṭabarānī also transmitted this report (3). He said: Muḥammad b. Idrīs b. ʿĀṣim al-Ḥammāl narrated to us; Isḥāq b. Rāhawayh narrated to us; ʿAmr b. Muḥammad al-ʿAnqazī narrated to us (4); and he related it from Ibn ʿAbbās concerning the verse {When his Lord manifested Himself to the mountain, He made it crumble} (5). He said (6): “He manifested only a portion of Himself no larger than the little finger, so {He made it crumble} (5)—that is, He reduced it to dust.”
Al-Bayhaqī likewise recorded it in his work Ithbāt al-Ruʾyah (7): Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us; Abū l-ʿAbbās Muḥammad b. Yaʿqūb narrated to us; Muḥammad b. Isḥāq—namely, al-Ṣāghānī—narrated to us (8); ʿAmr b. Ṭalḥah narrated to us in his Tafsīr; Asbāṭ narrated to us from al-Suddi, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: “He manifested a portion of Himself like the tip of the little finger, and thus He made [the mountain] crumble.”
