Al-Dārimī (1) narrated: Sulaymān b. Ḥarb informed us (2), Ḥammād b. Salamah narrated to us, from Thābit, from Anas, that the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—recited the verse, {When his Lord manifested Himself to the mountain, He made it crumble} (3). Ḥammād said, “Like this,” and Sulaymān pressed the tip of his thumb against the top joint of his right forefinger. He continued, “and the mountain sank (4), {and Moses fell down unconscious} (3).”
Al-Tirmidhī said, “This ḥadīth is ḥasan, ṣaḥīḥ, and gharīb (5); we know it only through the narration of Ḥammād b. Salamah.”
Abū Bakr b. Abī ʿĀṣim stated in his Kitāb al-Sunnah (6): “Ḥusayn b. al-Aswad narrated to us; ʿAmr b. Muḥammad al-ʿAnqazī (7) narrated to us; Asbāṭ narrated, from al-Suddī, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, concerning the verse {When his Lord manifested Himself to the mountain} (8). He said, ‘He manifested only a portion of Himself no larger than the little finger (9); then He made it {crumble} (8)—that is, into dust—and {Moses fell down unconscious} (8).’”
