As for someone other than him who adopted his doctrine on bodies⦗1⦘, he⦗2⦘ affirmed that composition, combination, separation, and ability are entities distinct from bodies. Al-Ashʿarī⦗3⦘ also reports from him that he used to claim: “Ability (istitaʿah) exists both before the act and alongside it, that it is a part of the one who possesses it; that the human being is a cluster of accidents, and likewise the body is a collection of accidents made up of color, taste, scent, heat, cold, softness⦗4⦘, and so forth; that accidents may⦗5⦘ in fact⦗6⦘ be transformed into bodies. On this point he was followed by Ḥafṣ al-Fard⦗7⦘ and others⦗8⦘.”
= Whether its parts are attributed to some in terms of precedence and subsequence or not. On this basis, ta’lif (composition) is a broader concept than tartib (ordering).

(1) In manuscripts S and T: “it contradicts his statement.”
(2) The word kāna (“was”) is omitted in al-Maqalat.
(3) In the original: mawḍiʿ (“place”). Confirmed in S. The occurrences are in al-Maqalat vol. 1, p. 339; vol. 2, pp. 16, 58.
(4) In S and T: wa maḥabba (“and love”).
(5) In S: tujūz (“it is permissible”).
(6) In the original: tattaqallab (“it fluctuates”); in S: tattaqallab; confirmed in T and in al-Maqalat.

He is Abu ʿAmr Ḥafṣ al-Fard, who adopted some views of Ḍirār ibn ʿAmr. Al-Dhahabi labeled him an innovator (mubtadiʿ), al-Nasāʾī described him as eloquent but not one who wrote down his ḥadiths, and al-Shāfiʿī declared him an unbeliever in their debate.
See: Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl by al-Dhahabi, vol. 1, p. 564; Lisān al-Mīzān by Ibn Ḥajar, vol. 2, pp. 230, 331; and al-Farq bayna al-Firaq by al-Baghdādī, p. 214.
(8) His phrase “and Ḥafṣ al-Fard and others agreed with him in that” is omitted from al-Maqalat.
“Others” refers to, for example, al-Ḥusayn al-Najjār, both of whom agree with Ḍirār ibn ʿAmr in the statement cited by the Shaykh. See their explicit positions in al-Maqalat vol. 2, pp. 16, 58.
