Likewise, the same wording was transmitted by Yazīd ibn Wahb (1) from Sufyān, and by Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Maysarah (2) from Sufyān.
I say: al-Bukhārī (3) also recorded it from al-Ḥakam with this exact wording, but he limited the chain to Sufyān alone, saying:
“Ḥaddathanī al-Ḥakam ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭabarī—I wrote from him in Mecca—he narrated to us (4) Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah, who said: ‘I met our elders (5) seventy years ago—among them ʿAmr ibn Dīnār—who used to declare: The Qur’an is the Speech of Allah and is not created.’”
According to al-Lālakāʾī, no one besides al-Bukhārī has related it in this precise form.
Isḥāq ibn Rāhawayh, however, affirmed both wordings (6) from Ibn ʿUyaynah on the authority of ʿAmr, with a complete chain and text. He mentioned—Allah knows best—Zurqān and Wakīʿ by name because Wakīʿ was among the most knowledgeable imams about the unbelief of the Jahmiyyah and the inner nature of their doctrine. He was also one of the strongest in condemning them and warning others against them (7), so his censure reached the Jahmiyyah in a way unmatched by the criticism of anyone else. They are among the most ignorant of people concerning the prophetic reports and the statements of the early Muslims and the imams, as their own books testify. As for Muḥammad ibn Shujāʿ, he (8) is discredited and accused.
