Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

Ahmad ibn Hanbal, who said (1): “A shaykh informed me that he heard Ibn ʿUyaynah say, ‘The Quran came forth from Allah.’”

He also said (2): Abū ʿAbd Allāh—that is, Ahmad ibn Hanbal—narrated to us (3): Ibn Mahdī narrated to us, from Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ, from al-ʿAlāʾ ibn al-Ḥārith, from Zayd ibn Arṭaʾah, from Jubayr ibn Nufayr, who reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “You will never return to Allah with anything better than that which came forth from Him,” meaning the Quran (4).

He further said (5): ʿAbbās al-Warrāq and others narrated to us from Abū al-Naḍr Hāshim ibn al-Qāsim; Bakr ibn Khunays narrated to us (6) (7) from Layth ibn Abī Sulaym, from Zayd ibn

The book was sent to Muḥammad ibn Hārūn because of his doubt concerning the Qurʾān—namely, that he refused to say it is uncreated. In it the author urged him to cling to the Book of Allah, act in obedience to Him, and retract his statement, clarifying the correct position and citing certain Qurʾānic verses and hadiths that must be followed on this matter. He—may Allah have mercy on him—ordered that the book be copied in two copies, for he did not trust their treachery. Abu Bakr al-Marwazī reports that Imam Aḥmad added to the book and omitted parts after it had been presented to him, then instructed him to bring it to him. Al-Khallāl mentions this book in the sixth volume of al-Musnad—the aforementioned source—under the title “A Comprehensive Refutation of Those Who Say: The Qurʾān Is Created.” (1) In the original: “He said: He informed me.” The reading confirmed by S, T, and al-Musnad. (2) It reads: “An addition by the Shaykh—may Allah have mercy on him,” referring to Abu Bakr al-Marwazī, and here the text connects directly with what precedes it in al-Musnad. (3) The phrase “meaning Ahmad ibn Ḥanbal” is a clarification by the Shaykh and does not appear in al-Musnad. (4) Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī 5/177 – Book of the Virtues of the Qurʾān – Chapter 17, Hadith 2912. It is recorded with the wording: “You will not return to Allah with anything better than that which He brought forth,” meaning the Qurʾān. Al-Ḥindī, author of Kanz al-ʿUmmāl 1/514, no. 2287, has it: “You will not bring anything back to Allah better than what He brought forth,” meaning the Qurʾān. The Shaykh will quote it in the exact wording narrated by at-Tirmidhī and discuss its grading on p. 368. (5) That is: Abu Bakr al-Marwazī. (6) In al-Musnad: “... he said: Thana ...” (7) In the original: “Habīsh.” In the edition: “Hanīs,” which is an error. The reading confirmed by S.
