Ishaq al-Saghani (1) narrated to us, saying: Abu Hatim al-Tawil related, “Wakiʿ declared, ‘Whoever says that the speech of Allah is not from Him has fallen into disbelief, and whoever says that any part of it is created (2) has likewise disbelieved.’ ”
Abu al-Qasim al-Lalakai (3) also transmitted: (Ahmad ibn Farah (4) the Blind stated, “ʿAli ibn al-Hasan (6) al-Hashimi narrated to us,” [he said] (7)
(1) In the original reading: al-Saʿnānī; in our manuscripts and those of Ṭāʾ: al-Ṣafānī, which is incorrect. The correct reading is al-Musnad. He is Abu Bakr Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq ibn Jaʿfar al-Ṣāghānī, one of the reliable and accomplished imams, who traveled widely in pursuit of knowledge. Al-Daraqutnī describes him as thiqah (trustworthy), even above trustworthiness. He died in 290 AH. See: Ibn Abī Yaʿlā, Tabaqāt al-Ḥanābila, vol. 1, pp. 269–270; al-ʿAlīmī, al-Manhaj al-Aḥmad, vol. 1, p. 236.
(2) In al-Musnad it reads: “inna minhu shay’an makhlūq” (that from Him there is something created).
(3) Al-Lalkāʾī, Sharḥ Usūl Iʿtiqād Ahl al-Sunnah wa-l-Jamāʿah, vol. 2, p. 219.
(4) In our manuscripts it appears as Faraj, which is erroneous. He is Abu Jaʿfar Aḥmad ibn Farḥ ibn Jibrīl al-Ḍarīr al-Muqriʾ; al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī describes him as thiqah (trustworthy) and maʾmūn (reliable), an expert in Arabic, linguistics, and the Qurʾān. He died in 303 AH. See: al-Baghdādī, Tārīkh Baghdād, vol. 4, pp. 345–346.
(5) All manuscripts read “... al-Ḍarīr wa-haddathanī ...,” a reading corroborated by Sharḥ Usūl Iʿtiqād Ahl al-Sunnah.
(6) All manuscripts read “al-Ḥusayn,” a reading also confirmed by Sharḥ Usūl Iʿtiqād Ahl al-Sunnah. He is Abu al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Hāshimī; he transmitted from Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-Marwazī, Jaʿfar al-Firyānī, and others, and was narrated upon by Abū Nuʿaym al-Isfahānī and others. See: al-Baghdādī, Tārīkh Baghdād, vol. 11, pp. 383–384.
