“I met Muhammad ibn Yahya (1) in Basra, at the gathering of Bundar (2). I asked him about Dawud, and he told me exactly what Muhammad ibn Yahya had written to Ahmad ibn Hanbal. He said, ‘He left our region of Khurasan in the worst condition, and he even wrote to me (3) in his own hand, declaring: The scholars of Naysabur in Khurasan have testified against him concerning this statement.’
[I said] (4): As for what he uttered in Ishaq’s presence, I suspect it concerned the issue of lafẓ (articulation), for he made both assertions, just as al-Khallal (5) reports: ‘I heard Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Sadaqah (6) say, “I heard Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn …”’
(1) Originally edited by Ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya; the reading from S is likely correct. His biography appeared earlier on p. 388.
(2) He is Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Bashar ibn Uthman ibn Dawud ibn Kaysan al-Abdi al-Basri, a hadith transmitter nicknamed al-Bandar (the chief transmitter of hadith) in his region and era, also called al-Bandar al-Hafiz. He transmitted hadith to each of the authors of the six canonical collections; Abu Hatim al-Razi described him as “truthful.” He was born in 167 AH and died in 252 AH. (3) In S: “to me.”
(4) The text within brackets is an addition from the printed edition. In the original there is a blank space at the end of the line amounting to four words; in S it amounts to three words.
(5) He is mentioned by al-Dhahabi in Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’, 13:103, and by al-Subki in Tabaqat al-Shafi‘iya, 2:286, but I did not find him in al-Sunnah.
(6) He is Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Sadaqah al-Baghdadi, an imam, muhaddith, and jurist noted for precision and careful verification. Al-Daraqutni said of him: “trustworthy, trustworthy.” He transmitted Qur’anic recitations from a group and reported many legal issues from the Imam. He died in 293 AH. See: Tarikh Baghdad by al-Baghdadi, 5:40–41; Tabaqat al-Hanabila by Ibn Abi Ya‘la, 1:64–65; Tadhkirat al-Huffaz by al-Dhahabi, 2:745–746.
