Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

that nothing of it had come from me—meaning the statements they were quoting from him.’

So I went in to my father and relayed that to him, not realizing that he (Dawud) was standing at the door. My father said to me, ‘He is lying. A letter from Muhammad ibn Yahya has reached me; bring that folder (1).’

Al-Khallal said: He then related the rest of the conversation, but I did not retain it well, so (2) Abu Yahya Zakariyya (3) ibn (4) al-Faraj al-Bazzaz informed me. He said, ‘One day I came to Abu Bakr al-Marwazi (5) and found Abd Allah ibn Ahmad with him. Abu Bakr said to him, “I would like you to tell Abu Yahya (6) what (7) you heard from your father concerning Dawud al-Asbahani.” Abd Allah said, “When Dawud arrived…”’

(1) In the original manuscript (S) it reads ḍiyārah; the printed edition (Ṭ) gives ḍabārah. Ḍabārah derives from iḍbārah, meaning “bundle of sheets.” See Lisān al-ʿArab by Ibn Manẓūr, 4:479 (s.v. ḍabr). (2) The judge Abū al-Ḥusayn ibn Abī Yaʿlā reports in Ṭabaqāt al-Ḥanābila (1:58) that Abū Yaḥyā Zakariyyā ibn al-Faraj al-Bazzāz said, “One day I came….” He recounts the story transmitted by al-Khallāl from Abū Yaḥyā; accordingly, I will compare this text with that in Ṭabaqāt. (3) All extant copies read “Abū Yaḥyā from Zakariyyā.” The correct name, however, is as established in Ṭabaqāt and in the manuscript al-Musnad min Masā’il Abī ʿAbd Allāh Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal (folios 196, 198). (4) In the original it appears as Zakariyyā ibn al-Faraj al-Rāzī, whereas in S and Ṭ it reads Zakariyyā Abū al-Faraj al-Rāzī. I have found no biographical entry for him; the form adopted in Ṭabaqāt and in the manuscript al-Musnad min Masā’il Abī ʿAbd Allāh Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal is likely correct. (5) All manuscripts read al-Marwazī, which is a scribal error; the correct form is confirmed by Ṭabaqāt. His biography appears above on p. 337. (6) The original reads Abū Bakr Yaḥyā, which is erroneous; the correct reading is attested in S, Ṭ, and in Ṭabaqāt. (7) The original has amā, whereas Ṭabaqāt reads bimā; the latter is confirmed by S and Ṭ.
