Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

the book al-Muqniʿ (1), and the same report was also transmitted from him (2) by Qāḍī Abū Yaʿlā in his work al-Bayān fī l-Qurʾān (3), even though the Qāḍī and his followers maintain the first opinion and reinterpret Aḥmad’s contrary statements as applying only to the audible sounds and the like—yet the matter is not so.

(1) The Kitāb al-Muqni‘ by Abū Bakr on jurisprudence was referred to in the aforementioned sources. Ibn al-Jawzī states in al-Muntazam (vol. 7, p. 72): “He has many valuable works, among them al-Muqnī‘, consisting of about one hundred volumes.” Neither Brockelmann in his Geschichte der arabischen Litteratur nor Sezgin in his Geschichte des arabischen Schrifttums lists it among Abū Bakr’s works. The Sheikh (may God have mercy on him) discusses the two views attributed to Abū Bakr in his Darʾ Taʿārud al-ʿAql wa-l-Naql (vol. 2, p. 74). He reports that Abū Bakr, when asked—“If you say that He has always been speaking, wouldn’t that be absurd?”—replied: “Among our scholars are two opinions. The first is that He has eternally spoken, just as knowledge has no opposite other than ignorance; speech has no opposite other than silence (khurs). The second opinion, held by others among our scholars, affirms that He has declared Himself the Creator, yet it is not necessary that He be Creator at every moment. Rather, we assert that He is Creator at the moment He wills to create. Thus, even if He were not Creator at every instant, that does not negate His being the Creator; similarly, even if He did not speak at every instant, that does not negate His speech. He is at once the speaking One and the Creator, though neither attribute applies at every single moment.” (2) In the base text the word reads inda (“with”); in manuscript S it appears as ‘an (“from”). The reading adopted here is based on edition T. (3) This refers to the book ʾIdāḥ al-Bayān fī Masʾalat al-Qurʾān by the judge Abū Yaʿlā, which the Sheikh (may God have mercy on him) cites in Darʾ Taʿārud al-ʿAql wa-l-Naql (vol. 2, p. 74). The Sheikh frequently abbreviates the title, which caused me some difficulty when identifying the work. He further reports Abū Yaʿlā’s opinion on this matter.
