Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

In his Taʾrīkh (1), transmitted from al-Bukhārī’s teacher and cited by al-Burqānī, though the two versions differ only in a few letters (2).

What the foremost scholars of the Sunnah and hadith have affirmed (3) must be upheld, for the transmitted reports state that the Almighty has always been perfect in His attributes: no attribute is newly acquired by Him, nor does any attribute ever leave Him. This is not at odds with their statements that He descends as He wills (4), that He will come on the Day of Resurrection as He wills (5), that He rose over the Throne after creating the heavens, and that He speaks whenever

(1) In manuscript S the reading is “na tarikhuh” (his date), which is a scribal error. The full report appears in Kitāb al-Maʿrifa wa-l-Tārīkh by Abū Yūsuf Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān al-Fasawī, vol. 1, pp. 527–530. (2) In the autograph: after the word al-Aḥruf (“the letters”) there is a blank space equivalent to four words. In manuscript S the blank accommodates two words but falls at the end of a line; in edition T the text continues without interruption. The marginal note reads: “Pause at tajaddud al-fi‘l (‘renewal of action’) and manʿ tajaddud al-ṣifah (‘prevention of renewal of attribute’).” The indicated blank likely marks the end of one section and the start of another. (3) The original reads mutabiʿīn (“followers”), as confirmed in both S and T manuscripts, and this is probably the contextually appropriate term. (4) We shall clarify the position of the salaf (may Allah have mercy on them) regarding the Lord’s (exalted is He) descent in our discussion of the ḥadīth of descent cited by the Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him) on p. 516. (5) The Lord, glorified be He, will come on the Day of Resurrection to adjudicate among people in a manner befitting His majesty and grandeur. His descent, coming, and visitation are among His volitional actions. This doctrine was rejected by the deniers of attributes (nafā’ al-muʿaṭṭilah)—notably the Jahmiyyah, the Muʿtazilah, and their adherents who prioritized personal opinion. The imams of Islam refuted them with detailed exposition grounded in the relevant texts. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) states: “…that descent, coming, visitation, istiwā’ (establishment), ṣuʿūd (ascension), and irtifāʿ (elevation) are all forms of His actions. He enacts whatever He wills, and His actions, like His attributes, are intrinsic to Him. Were this not so, He would neither be active nor describable by attributes of perfection. Hence His descent, coming, istiwā’, elevation, ascension, and the like are among His actions which—if deemed metaphorical—imply that all His actions are metaphorical; He would then have no real action, rendering Him akin to inanimate objects…”
