Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

Al-Barqānī also transmitted it in his Ṣaḥīḥ (1) through the very chain (2) that al-Bukhārī employed, from al-Bukhārī’s own teacher (3), preserving the report in its complete wording (4):

A man came to Ibn ʿAbbās and said, “O Ibn ʿAbbās, I encounter passages in the Qur’an that seem at variance with one another, and this (5) has unsettled my heart.”

Ibn ʿAbbās replied, “Is it a matter of denial (6)?”

The man said:

(1) The introduction to al-Burqani has already been given, and I found no work entitled Sahih al-Burqani. Instead, sources dealing with this matter mention that he composed a musnad containing the material of Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, which survives only in manuscript; see above, p. 146. He also authored Takhreej li-Sahih al-Hadith, likewise in manuscript. It is likely that one of these two works is the one referenced, which the Shaykh abbreviated simply as “al-Sahih.” Consult: Hadiyat al-‘Arifin by al-Baghdadi, vol. 1, p. 74; History of Arabic Literature by Brockelmann, vol. 3, p. 161; History of Arabic Heritage by Sezgin, vol. 1, p. 474; Mu‘jam al-Mu’allifin, vol. 2, p. 74; Al-A‘lām by al-Zarkali, vol. 1, p. 205. (2) In both the manuscript and the printed text: read “alladhi” (which). (3) He is Yusuf ibn ‘Adi ibn Zariq ibn Isma‘il, the reliable imām and hadith scholar Abu Ya‘qub al-Tamimi al-Kufi, died 222 AH. Al-Dhahabi states that Yusuf has only one hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari—a long report transmitted by Abu Ishaq al-Duraji, who authorized it from Abu Ja‘far al-Saydalani and others—then he traced the isnād to Ibn ‘Abbas and quoted a portion of the text. See Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’ by al-Dhahabi, vol. 10, pp. 484–487. (4) Ibn Hajar recorded this report via the chain cited by the Shaykh (may God have mercy on him) in Taghliq al-Ta‘liq, vol. 4, p. 301 (ed. Sa‘id ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Qazqi), noting that al-Burqani had quoted it in full in Kitab al-Musafaha. However, Ibn Hajar provided only its isnād and a fragment of the text. The complete report is transmitted by Ya‘qub ibn Sufyan al-Fasawi in his al-Ma‘rifa wa al-Tarikh, which the Shaykh also cited after completing the transmission; see p. 327 below. (5) I.e., it is omitted in Taghliq al-Ta‘liq. (6) In Taghliq al-Ta‘liq it reads “takdhib” (denial).
