and by affirming the Quran (1); no describer can encompass Him, nor can anyone set limits to Him. Exalted is Allah above what the Jahmiyyah and the Mushabbihah claim (2).

I said to him, “What is it, then, that the Mushabbihah say?”

He replied, “Anyone who says, ‘Sight like my sight, a hand like my hand—’”

And Hanbal said in another place, “—and a foot like my foot—has likened Allah to His creation. By doing so he confines Him; this is reprehensible speech, a delimitation, and I dislike discussing it.”

ʿAbd Allah said, “Keep the Quran pure (3).”

The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “He places His foot” (4). We believe in it without circumscribing it and without rejecting it

He laughs. Thus it is reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and from his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). Only one who has no standing among the people of truth would deny this. Then he (may Allah have mercy on him) cited the hadiths from the Prophet (peace be upon him) through various Companions by different chains. After presenting them he says (p. 284): "We believe in all these sunan (traditions), and we do not ask ‘How?’ Those who transmitted these sunan are the very ones who conveyed to us the sunan concerning purification, prayer, zakat, fasting, Hajj, jihad, and all rulings of halal and haram. The scholars accepted them in the best manner, and none rejects these sunan except those who follow the path of the Mu‘tazilah. Whoever opposes them—whether by reporting them or by asking ‘How?’—is accused; therefore, beware of him." (1) In the ṭāʾ edition: wa-tabyeen ("and the clarification"). (2) In the s and ṭāʾ editions: yaqūl ("he says"). (3) i.e. ‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud; consignment of his full statement: "…and do not write anything in it except the words of Allah." See al-Sunnah by ‘Abdullah ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, p. 23. (4) Narrated by al-Bukhari in al-Ṣaḥīḥ 6/47 (Tafsir Sura Qāf—ch. “His words {And you will say, ‘Is there more?’}”) from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “He will enter the Fire and say, ‘Is there more?’ until his foot is set, and it [the Fire] says, ‘Enough, enough.’” Also reported by al-Tirmidhi (5/390, Book of Tafsir, ch. on Sura Qāf, Hadith No. 3272) via Anas ibn Malik.
