Hanbal said elsewhere:
“He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.”
(1) without limit or measure, and (2) no matter how eloquent, the describers can never reach Him. His attributes are from Him and for Him; we do not go beyond the Quran and the hadith. Thus we speak as He has spoken and describe Him only as He has described Himself, going no further, for no human description can encompass Him (3). We believe in the whole of the Quran, its decisive and its allegorical verses alike. We do not strip Him of any of His attributes because of some heinous objection (4); rather, we affirm every attribute He affirmed for Himself—speech, descent (5), His being alone with His servant on the Day of Resurrection, and His placing His veil (6) over him. All of this indicates that Allah—blessed and exalted—will be seen in the Hereafter (7). To set any limit in this matter is an innovation; our duty is to submit to Allah’s command without ascribing modality or limit, except as He has described Himself: All-Hearing, All-Seeing, ever-speaking, all-knowing (8), Forgiving, Knower of the unseen and the seen, the All-Aware.
