Likewise, al-Ashʿarī records in al-Maqālāt (1) the Muʿtazilite dispute over whether the Creator (al-Bārī) may be described as speaking. He writes:
“The Muʿtazilah differed on this point: some affirmed that the Creator is a speaker, while others refused to affirm that the Creator is a speaker, saying, ‘If we were to affirm (2) that He speaks, we would thereby affirm (3) that He is acted upon (4).’ Those who held this view (5) were al-Iskāfī (6) and ʿAbbād ibn Sulaymān (7).”

He authored many works on Mu‘tazila during al-Ma’mun’s reign and belonged to the seventh generation of Mu‘tazilites. Abu al-Ḥusayn al-Malṭī describes him as “one of the theologians who filled the earth with books and disputes and transgressed the bounds of Mu‘tazila into kufr (disbelief) and zandaqa (heresy).” See Lisan al-Mīzān by Ibn Ḥajar, vol. 3, pp. 229–230; Siyar A‘lam al-Nubalā’ by al-Dhahabī, vol. 10, pp. 551–552; al-Tanbīh wa al-Radd ‘alā Ahl al-Ahwā’ wa al-Bid‘a by al-Malṭī, p. 39.
