One might object that Ibrahim did not meet Ibn Mas‘ud, so how could he narrate from him? However, Ibn Sa‘d records in his al-Tabaqāt (6:272) from al-A‘mash that he said: “I said to Ibrahim, ‘When you transmit to me from ‘Abd Allah, be sure to give the isnād (chain of transmission).’ He replied, ‘If I say, “So-and-so said, ‘Abd Allah said…,’” then I have heard it from more than one of his companions; and if I say, “So-and-so narrated to me,” then indeed So-and-so narrated to me.’” (1) Narrated by Abū al-Qāsim al-Lalkā‘ī in Sharḥ Usūl I‘tiqād Ahl al-Sunnah 2:231–232, with the identical chain of transmission cited by the Shaykh, may Allah have mercy on him. (2) Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Hārūn al-Rūyānī, the ḥāfiẓ and imam; authenticated by Abū ‘Alā’ al-Khalīlī, who noted that he authored works in fiqh. He died in 307 AH.
