Nevertheless, this very statement has been preserved from the foremost Companions—such as ʿAlī, Ibn Masʿūd, and Ibn ʿAbbās—and therein lies a proof against those who claim that the individual verdicts of these eminent Companions carry no evidentiary weight.
Al-Lālakāʾī (1) transmits it through two chains: one via Muḥammad ibn al-Muṣaffā (2) and the other via al-Faḍl ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Fārisī (3); both routes pass through ʿAmr ibn Jumayʿ Abū al-Mundhir (4), from Maymūn ibn Mihrān (5), from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: When ʿAlī appointed the two arbiters, the Khārijites protested, “You have delegated judgment to two men.” He replied, “I have not delegated judgment to any created being; rather, I have delegated it to the Quran.”

(2) Possibly Abu ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Miṣfāʾ ibn Bahlūl al-Qurashī al-Ḥimṣī, known as al-Ḥāfiẓ. Al-Dhahabī describes him as reliable (thiqah), author of al-Sunnah and a hadith scholar. He died in 246 AH. See Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl by al-Dhahabī, vol. 4, p. 43; Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb by Ibn Ḥajar, vol. 9, pp. 460–461; al-Wāfī bi-l-Wafayāt by al-Ṣafadī, vol. 5, p. 33.

(4) He is Abu al-Mundhir ʿAmr ibn Jamīʿ al-Baṣrī, a Kufan who served as judge (qāḍī) of Ḥalwān. He transmitted from al-Aʿmash and others and was cited by Kufan narrators. Al-Bukhārī declared him weak in hadith. See al-Jarḥ wa-l-Taʿdīl by Ibn Abī Ḥātim, vol. 3, p. 224; Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl by al-Dhahabī, vol. 3, p. 251; Lisān al-Mīzān by Ibn Ḥajar, vol. 4, pp. 358–359.
(5) He is Abu Ayyūb Maymūn ibn Mihrān al-Rāqī, a scholar of al-Jazīrah. ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz appointed him over its kharāj (land tax) and judiciary. He is reliable in hadith and narrated from ʿĀʾishah, Abū Hurayrah, Ibn ʿAbbās, and others. Born in 37 AH, died in 117 AH. See Ḥilyat al-Awliyāʾ by Abū Nuʿaym, vol. 4, pp. 82–97; Tadhkirat al-Ḥuffāẓ by al-Dhahabī, vol. 1, pp. 98–99; Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb by Ibn Ḥajar, vol. 10, pp. 390–392.

ومع هذا فقد حفظ عن أئمة الصّحابة كعلي وابن مسعود وابن عباس هذا القول، وفي ذلك حجة على من يزعم أن أقوال هؤلاء الأئمة بدون الصّحابة ليس بحجة.
