of the stone to him, (1) and many other incidents (2) whose enumeration would be endless. It is well-known that none of this is the Speech of Allah—especially to anyone who knows that Allah is the Creator of all things, and that He creates His servants’ actions, their words, their movements, and everything else—for, were it otherwise, all such speech would necessarily have to be Allah’s Speech, if

From among his companions who were with him. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them, “Raise your hands,” and he sent for the Jewish woman and called her. He asked her, “Did you poison this sheep?” She replied, “Who told you?” He said, “This one told me”—pointing to his forearm. She said, “Yes.” He asked, “And why did you do that?” She answered, “I thought: if he is a prophet, it will not harm him; if he is not a prophet, we shall be rid of him.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) pardoned her and did not punish her, although some of his companions who had eaten of the sheep died… Hadith. See: Sunan Abī Dāwūd 4/648, Kitāb al-Diyāt, chapter “On one who gives a man a poisoned drink or food and he dies—what is his liability?”; and Sunan al-Dārimī 1/34 (al-Muqaddima), chapter “Concerning the honor shown by his Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the speech of the dead”; and Jāmi‘ al-Uṣūl by Ibn al-Athīr 11/328, Hadith 8888—fifth book, first section: “On his informing about the unseen.” Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Arnā’ūṭ, editor of Jāmi‘ al-Uṣūl by Ibn al-Athīr (11/328), notes:(1) “…and its isnād is disconnected, for az-Zuhri did not hear from Jābir ibn ‘Abdallāh. Yet the hadiths that precede it support its authenticity. Those hadiths concern the poisoned sheep and do not mention the forearm; they are sound narrations recorded by al-Bukhārī, Muslim, and others. Al-Haythamī reports in Majma‘ az-Zawā’id 6/153, chapter ‘The Battle of Khaybar,’ on the authority of ‘Urwah: When Allah gave Khaybar to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and those who had slain among them were killed, the Jewish woman Zaynab bint al-Hārith—daughter of Murbiḥ’s paternal uncle—sent a slaughtered sheep… and he records a narration similar to that of Jābir. (1) The Shaykh—may Allah have mercy on him—is referring to the hadith narrated by Muslim and others from Jābir ibn Samurah, in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “I recognize a stone in Mecca that used to greet me before I was commissioned as a prophet; surely I recognize it now.” See Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 4/1782 (Kitāb al-Faḍā’il, “The virtue of the Prophet’s lineage and the stone greeting him before prophethood,” Hadith 2277) and Sunan at-Tirmidhī 5/592–593 (Kitāb al-Manaqib, “On the signs affirming the prophethood of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and what Allah has specially granted him,” Hadith 3624), where at-Tirmidhī comments: “This is a ḥasan gharib hadith.” (2) In the source it reads “ammā.”
