Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

Al-Bukhari (1) said: ʿAli ibn ʿĀṣim (2) declared, “Those who assert that Allah has a child are more disbelieving than those who claim that Allah does not speak.”

He also said (3): “Beware of al-Marīsī and his followers, for their words lead to zandaqa (heresy). I once spoke with their teacher Jahm (6), and he could not even affirm that there is a deity in the heaven.”

Al-Bukhari (7) added: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAffān (8) reported, “I heard Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah say: In the year al-Marīsī was beaten, Ibn ʿUyaynah rose from his gathering in anger and proclaimed: ‘Woe to you! The Quran is the Speech of Allah, and I have accompanied—’”

(1) In Khalq Af’al al-ʿIbād (On the Creation of Human Actions), p. 32: “On the authority of ʿAli….” (2) He is Abu al-Ḥasan ʿAli ibn ʿĀṣim ibn Suhayb al-Qurashī al-Taymī, a leading imam and chief muhaddith who transmitted from Aḥmad and others. He was born in 109 AH and died in Wasit in 201 AH. See: Ibn Saʿd, al-Ṭabaqāt al-Kubrā, 7:313; al-Dhahabī, Siyar Aʿlām al-Nubalāʾ, 9:249–262; Ibn Ḥajar, Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb, 344–348. (3) Refers to ʿAli ibn ʿĀṣim. (4) The printed edition reads “ibn,” which is a copying error (taṣḥīf). (5) The base text reads “Abi Jad”; MS S likewise reads “Abi Jad”; the printed edition has “… kullan minhum ibn Jad al-zandaqa.” The reading adopted here, from Khalq Af’al al-ʿIbād, restores a coherent sense to the passage. (6) The base text reads “jamaʿan,” a scribal error; the printed edition reads “jaʿdan,” also incorrect. The reading supported by MS S and Khalq Af’al al-ʿIbād is adopted here. (7) In Khalq Af’al al-ʿIbād, p. 33: on the authority of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUffān that he said: “It was mentioned before Sufyān ibn ʿUyayna the incident in which al-Marīsī was flogged, whereupon Ibn … stood up…” (8) He is Abū Bakr ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUffān al-Sarkhsī, resident in Baghdad, who narrated from al-Sammāk, Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyāḍ, and others; he is listed by Ibn Ḥibbān in al-Thiqāt. See: al-Baghdādī, Tārīkh Baghdad, 10:264–265; Ibn Ḥajar, Lisān al-Mīzān, 3:423–424.
