—(1) which, they allege, is the spirit separated from bodies, namely the Tenth Intellect that corresponds to the lunar sphere; (2) they further maintain that all the forms and accidents found in this world overflow from it; and (3) some of their hypocritical partisans—who try to reconcile prophethood with their doctrine—assert that this very Intellect is Gabriel (4).
They say: the meanings that pour into the Prophet’s soul, together with the letters that are formed within him, constitute the speech of Allah, just as they claim that whatever is pictured within his soul of
( ) Shaykh al-Islam, may God have mercy upon him, says:
“…As for these people, they say that the intellects—which their representatives who pose as Muslims call angels—are caused (ma‘lūlah), generated by God, not created by His will and power, and they claim that these intellects are the Lord of the Worlds.
According to them, the First Intellect brought into existence everything other than God, the Second Intellect brought into existence everything other than God and the First Intellect, and so on until one reaches the Tenth Intellect, the Active Intellect associated with the sphere of the Moon. They say that this Intellect brought into existence everything beneath the celestial spheres—air, clouds, mountains, animals, plants, and minerals—and that from it inspiration and knowledge flow to the prophets and others. The discourse that Moses, peace be upon him, heard occurred, in their view, not in external reality but within his own self; it was a flow of influence emanating from this Active Intellect, and some of them say it was Gabriel.

In this work, may God have mercy on him, he explained that the root of their doctrine is the claim that the Creator cannot change the world, has no power or choice in its governance, and to maintain coherence and avoid contradiction they ascribe all occurrences to natural causes. He refuted this thoroughly and conclusively, demonstrating that their unbelief is greater than that of the Christians, who admit that He created all creatures but united with Christ.

(1) In the original manuscript the word is alladhīna (“those who”); the printed edition retains this reading, which seems most appropriate for understanding.
(2) In both the manuscript and printed editions the verb is yaz‘umūn (“they claim”), without the conjunction wa (“and”).
(3) In the original the verb is yujādilūn (“they dispute”); this is confirmed by both the manuscript and printed editions.
(4) In the printed edition the name is Jibrīl.
