They are two sects: the Jahmiyyah (Jahmites) and the Rafidah (Rafidites).

Now (1) at that time their affair had not yet spread, branched out, or laid bare its corruption as it would later on. The early Rafidites were not Jahmites; rather, they affirmed the divine attributes, and most of them openly employed the term jism (“body”) and the like. Just as (2) people have documented their doctrines—such as what (3) Abū al-Hasan al-Ashʿarī and others have recorded in Kitāb al-Maqālāt (4).

As for the Jahmites, they were not Rafidites; instead, iʿtizal (Muʿtazilite theology) had become widespread among them, and the Muʿtazilah were opposed to the Rafidah and nearer to nasb, for iʿtizal

al-Basri al-Luʾluʾi was among the foremost memorizers of hadith. Imām ash-Shāfiʿī said of him: “I do not know his equal in the world.” He was born in Basra in 135 AH and died there in 198 AH. See: Tarīkh Baghdād (al-Baghdādī), vol. 10: 240–248; Tadhkirat al-Ḥuffāẓ (al-Dhahabī), vol. 1: 329–332; Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb (Ibn Ḥajar), vol. 6: 279–281. (1) In the printed edition: “hadhān an wa-qad,” a copyist’s error. (2) The original reads “mimma,” as confirmed in both manuscripts and editions. (3) Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī mentions the doctrines of the Rāfiḍa in his Maqālāt al-Islāmiyyīn, vol. 1: 106 ff. (4) Maqālāt al-Islāmiyyīn wa-Ikhtilāf al-Musallīn by Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī, abridged by Muḥammad b. Muṭrif al-Istarābādī al-Ḍubī. First published in Istanbul in 1929 CE; reprinted in West Germany in 1963 CE. Muḥammad Muḥyī al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd issued its first volume in 1950 and both volumes in 1969, noting in his preface that this is the second edition. See Fuʾād Sezkin, Tārīkh al-Turāth al-ʿArabī, vol. 1, pt. 4 (Aqāʾid wa-Tasawwuf), pp. 37–38; and the introduction to the edition edited by Muḥammad Muḥyī al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd.
