among the gravest innovations introduced into Islam. Hence the outright zanādiqah (1)—such as the atheists from among the Qarmaṭians and the like—merely conceal themselves beneath these two guises: tajahhum and tashayyuʿ.
(2) Imām Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Bukhārī said in his book Khalq al-Afʿāl, citing Abū ʿUbayd (3): “I do not care whether I perform the prayer (4) behind a jahmī or a rāfiḍī, or whether I pray behind a Jew or a Christian (5). They are not to be greeted with salām, visited, inter-married with, allowed to testify, nor may their slaughtered animals be eaten.
(6) He also said: and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī (7)

(1) In the original: “al-zindiqah” (heresy). In the printed edition: “aznadhiqah.” The correct reading is that of the manuscript.
(2) See: Khalaq Afʿāl al-ʿIbād by al-Bukhārī, p.35.
(3) In the manuscript: “ʿAbd Allāh.” The phrase “from Abu Ubayd” is omitted in Khalaq Afʿāl al-ʿIbād. “Abu Ubayd” likely refers to al-Qāsim ibn Sallām al-Baghdādī, the jurist, linguist, and judge, author of numerous works. Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal said of him: “Abu Ubayd is a master, and he grows better every day.” He was born in 157 AH and died in Mecca in 224 AH. (4) In Khalaq Afʿāl al-ʿIbād: “ṣallayt” (I prayed).
(5) In Khalaq Afʿāl al-ʿIbād: “... wa al-Rāfiḍī am ṣallayt khalf al-Yahūd wa al-Naṣārā” (“... and the Rāfiḍī said, ‘Or did you pray behind the Jews and Christians?’”).
(6) “He said” refers to al-Bukhārī. This addition is by the Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him), and the text is continuous with the preceding passage in Khalaq Afʿāl al-ʿIbād.
(7) He is Abū Saʿīd ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī ibn Ḥassan al-ʿIndī.
