Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

He said: “I was present with Khalid ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Qasri (1) … in Wasit (2) on the Day of Sacrifice. He proclaimed (3): ‘Return and slaughter your animals—may Allah accept it from you (4)—for I am going to sacrifice al-Jaʿd ibn Dirham. He alleges that Allah did not take Abraham (5) as an intimate friend and did not speak to Moses directly. Exalted is He, far above what al-Jaʿd says, immeasurably high!’ He then stepped down and slaughtered him.

As for this al-Jaʿd, it has been mentioned (6) that he was from (7) the people of …”

He was Abu’l-Haytham Khalid ibn Abd Allah ibn Yazid ibn Asad ibn Karz al-Bajali, governor of the Iraqis under Hisham and previously governor of Mecca for al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik and then for Suleiman. Generous and an eloquent preacher, al-Dhahabi describes him as “trustworthy but a vehement anti-Shi‘i zealot—hateful and oppressive,” while Ibn Ma‘in calls him “a wicked man who assails ‘Ali.” He killed al-Ja‘d ibn Durrah—a deed al-Dhahabi paradoxically counts among his merits—and was himself slain in 126 AH. See also: Ibn Khallikan, Wafayat al-A‘yan, vol. 2, pp. 226–232; al-Dhahabi, Mizan al-Itidal, vol. 1, p. 633; al-Dhahabi, Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala‘, vol. 5, pp. 425–432. The original reads “al-Qushayri,” which is a scribal error. (2) The term “Bwasit” is omitted in Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala‘. Wāsiṭ is a city founded by al-Hajjaj in 84 AH and completed in 86 AH; it takes its name from its position between Basra and Kufa. It grew into a major town famed for its orchards and date palms. See: Yaqut al-Hamawi, Mu‘jam al-Buldan, vol. 4, pp. 347–350. (3) In the Ṭ manuscript it reads “qala” (he said), whereas Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala‘ records “yaqulu Dhaḥwā…”. (4) The divine name “Allah” is omitted in the Ṭ manuscript. (5) The original reads “…min Ibrahim” (“from Abraham”), as confirmed by both the S and Ṭ manuscripts and by Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala‘. (6) Ibn Kathir notes in al-Bidaya wa’l-Nihaya (vol. 10, p. 23) that al-Ja‘d ibn Durrah hailed from Syria and served as tutor to Marwan al-Himar—hence his epithet Marwan al-Ja‘di. The Shaykh (d. 774/1373) reports in Dira’ Ta‘arud al-‘Aql wa’l-Naql (vol. 1, p. 313), citing Imam Ahmad: “It was said that he was originally from Harran, from whom al-Jahm ibn Safwan derived the doctrine of negating divine attributes. The people of Harran were the leading authorities among those Sabian philosophers…” (7) In the S and Ṭ manuscripts it reads “kana min…” (he was among…).
