And from (1) Yaḥyā ibn Shibl (2) who said: “I was sitting with Maqātil ibn Sulaymān (3) and ʿAbbād ibn Kathīr (4) when a young man came and asked, ‘What do you say about the verse (5): ‘Everything will perish except His Face’ (6)?’ Maqātil replied, ‘This questioner is a Jahmī.’ He then added, ‘Woe to you! By Allah, Jahm never once made pilgrimage to this Sacred House (7), nor did he sit with the scholars. He was merely a man granted a rambling, frivolous tongue (8).’
Al-Bukhārī (9) also related: ‘Ibn Maqātil (10) said, “I heard Ibn—”’
(1) It was transmitted with this chain of transmission by Abu Dawud in al-Masā’il of Imām Ahmad, p. 269.
(2) Yaḥyā ibn Shibl al-Balkhī narrated from ʿUbad ibn Kathīr and Miqātil ibn Sulaymān. Al-Dhahabī comment on him: “He is not well known; Makkī ibn Ibrāhīm narrated from him.” See Mīzān al-Iʿtidāl by al-Dhahabī, 4:385; Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb by Ibn Ḥajar, 11:229.
(3) This refers to Abū al-Ḥasan Miqātil ibn Sulaymān al-Balkhī, the exegete. Ibn Saʿd stated that hadith scholars approach his narrations with caution and reject them. Al-Dhahabī adds: “They unanimously agreed to abandon him.” He died in 152 AH. See Ṭabaqāt al-Kubrā by Ibn Saʿd, 7:373; Tahdhīb al-Asmā’ wa-l-Lughāt by al-Nawawī, 2:111; Siyar Aʿlām al-Nubalāʾ by al-Dhahabī, 7:201–202.
(4) In all manuscripts it reads “ʿAbd Allāh ibn Kathīr,” which is also the narrator confirmed in al-Masā’il of Imām Ahmad and is likely correct, as he is the one from whom Yaḥyā ibn Shibl narrates. He is weak as a hadith transmitter. See Lisān al-Mīzān by Ibn Ḥajar, 2:270–275.
(5) In al-Masā’il of Imām Ahmad it reads “taqūl.”
(6) Sūrah al-Qaṣaṣ, 28:88.
(7) The word “qaṭṭ” is omitted in al-Masā’il of Imām Ahmad.
(8) The term “hadha’” is omitted in al-Masā’il of Imām Ahmad.
(9) See Khalaq Afʿāl al-ʿIbād, p. 31. It was also transmitted by ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ahmad in al-Sunnah, p. 12, via other chains.
(10) It may refer to Muḥammad ibn Miqātil al-Marwazī, Abū al-Ḥasan (d. 226 AH), or to Muḥammad ibn Miqātil Abū Jaʿfar al-ʿAbādānī (d. 236 AH). Both are reliable and narrated from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak. See Tārīkh Baghdād by al-Baghdādī, 3:375–376; Tahdhīb al-Tahdhīb by Ibn Ḥajar.
