Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

, twisting its genuine meaning, and he declared the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—to be fabrications. He went on to claim that anyone who ascribed to Allah anything (1) of what Allah has ascribed to Himself in His Book, or what His Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—has reported about Him (2), was a disbeliever and an anthropomorphist. By his discourse he led a great many people astray (3), and men from among the associates of Abu Ḥanīfah as well as the followers of ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd in Basra adopted his view (4), thus establishing the creed of the Jahmiyyah (5). In this manner the scholars portrayed their condition (6), as Abū ʿAbd Allah Muḥammad b

(1) In the Refutation of the Jahmites: “...and whoever ascribes anything to Allah...” (2) “— sallallāhu ʿalayhi wa sallam —” is omitted in the original printed edition (ṭ) but retained in the manuscript (s). (3) In all extant copies: “wa adalla basharan kathīran” (“and led many people astray”). This reading is confirmed by the Refutation of the Jahmites. (4) He is Abu ʿUthmān ʿAmr ibn ʿUbayd ibn Bāb al-Baṣrī, a Persian-born theologian who became the leading Muʿtazilī of his era; his followers were known as the ʿAmriyya. Al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī reports that he studied under al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, memorized his teachings, and gained renown for his companionship; then Wāṣil ibn ʿAṭā’ dissuaded him from the doctrine of Ahl al-Sunnah, leading him to embrace the doctrine of al-qadar (predestination), invite others to it, and break with al-Ḥasan’s circle. Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn described him as “a man of evil,” one of the Dahriyyah who held that “people are like plants.” He was born in 80 AH and died in 142 AH. See Tārīkh Baghdād (al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī), 12:166–188; Lisān al-Mīzān (Ibn Ḥajar), 3:273–280; al-Bidāya wa al-Nihāya (Ibn Kathīr), 10:91–93. (5) End of the statement of Imam Aḥmad (may Allah have mercy on him). (6) On Jahm’s character and his encounter with the Samniyya: al-Bukhārī records it from Ḍamra from Ibn Shawdhab in Khalaq Afʿāl al-ʿIbād (ed. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ʿAmīrah, p. 31)—a report the sheikh will cite below. Al-Lālikā’ī also transmits, via a chain ending with Abū Muʿādh al-Balkhī, that Jahm was at the crossing of Tirmidh; originally from Kufa, eloquent yet devoid of knowledge or companionship with scholars, he spoke like speculative theologians. The Samniyya asked him, “Describe for us your Lord whom you worship.” He withdrew to his house for several days, then emerged saying: “He is this air that is in and with all things, and from which nothing is free...”
