And there is no doubt that many of these people may not even realize that they are hypocrites; rather, they still retain the root of faith, yet the matter of the hypocrites becomes confused for them until they end up lending them an ear. Allah the Exalted says:
“Had they gone forth with you, they would have added nothing to you but turmoil; they would have rushed about in your midst, seeking to sow discord among you, and among you are those who listen to them.” (1)
It is well known that the slander spread by the ahl al-ifk (the people of the slander) (2) concerning Aishah (3) originated with the hypocrites, and that a group of people became stained by it.
(1) Surah at-Tawba, verse 47.
(2) The hypocrites never ceased scheming against Islam and the Muslims until they attacked the Messenger, Muḥammad—peace be upon him—by smearing the reputation of his wife, ʿĀ’isha, the Mother of the Believers and daughter of al-Ṣiddīq, falsely accusing her of the heinous crime of adultery. The chief instigator and propagator of this slander was the head of the hypocrites, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ubayy ibn Salūl, who continued plotting against Islam until God destroyed him.
God revealed verses concerning this hypocrite and the others, to be recited until the Day of Resurrection, as a lesson for the Muslim community regarding the danger and harm of hypocrisy. He also exonerated the Mother of the Believers from the charge.
The verses begin with: “Indeed, those who came with the slander were a group among you; do not think it bad for you—rather, it is good for you…” and conclude with: “… for them is forgiveness and a generous provision.” (Surah an-Nūr 24:11–26)
The incident and its details are well known and are narrated at length by al-Bukhārī and Muslim in their Ṣaḥīḥ collections. Here, I refer only to them:
• al-Bukhārī, vol. 6, p. 5 – Tafsīr Sūrat an-Nūr, chapter on “Why, when you heard it, did the believing men and believing women think the best of themselves…” up to “… you would have been liars.”
• Muslim, vol. 4, ḥadīth 2129 – Kitāb at-Tawba, chapter on the hadith of the slander and the acceptance of the slanderer’s repentance.
(3) She is Umm ʿAbd Allāh ʿĀ’isha bint Abī Bakr al-Ṣiddīq—may God be pleased with them both—the most learned of Muslim women in jurisprudence and literature. She narrated 2,210 ḥadīths, making her the most prolific female narrator of the Prophet—peace be upon him. She died in Madīna in 58 AH; may God be pleased with her.

{لَوْ خَرَجُوا فِيكُمْ مَا زَادُوكُمْ إلا خَبَالًا وَلَأَوْضَعُوا خِلَالَكُمْ يَبْغُونَكُمُ الْفِتْنَةَ وَفِيكُمْ سَمَّاعُونَ لَهُمْ}
