(1) Abu al-Mahasīn Shihāb al-Dīn, the renowned imam (d. 682 AH). (2) Abu al-Barakāt Majd al-Dīn, the renowned imam (d. 652 AH). (3) There is disagreement over the origin of the family name “Taymiyyah.” Some report that his grandfather, Muḥammad ibn al-Khaḍr, performed the pilgrimage via Taymaʾ, saw a young girl there, and on returning found his wife had given birth to a daughter. He exclaimed, “O Taymiyyah, O Taymiyyah,” and thus acquired the nickname. Others hold that his grandfather Muḥammad’s mother was named Taymiyyah and was a noted preacher; he was therefore associated with and named after her.
