In none of their writings does one find a fully developed proof on this question from both sides, nor any undertaking of the heavy task required to deliver a decisive judgment between the two opposing views (3).
As for the Mālikī imams to whom people turn for religious authority—such as Ibn al-Qāsim (4), Ibn Wahb (5), and Ashhab (6),

(1) Originally the text reads “Ibn al-Fāris,” which is an error. He is Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad al-Ishbīlī al-Mālikī, known as Ibn al-ʿArabī, the jurist, memorizer, and judge. He authored works in various fields, among them ʿĀriḍat al-Aḥwadhī fī Sharḥ al-Ṭirmidhī and al-ʿAwāṣim min al-Qawāṣim (both printed), and others. He was born in 468 AH and died in 543 AH. (2) In manuscript S: “muʿtarifūn.” In the printed edition: “wa-muʿtarifūn.” (3) The original reads “al-mutafāwiḍīn,” but I have retained what appears correct in both manuscript S and the printed edition. (4) He is Abū ʿAbd Allāh ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Qāsim b. Khālid b. Jināda, a freedman of Zubayd b. al-Hārith al-ʿAtqī. He narrated the Muwattaʾ from Mālik with a sound, low-variance transmission. He was a jurist and a pious man who moved to Medina, studied under Imam Mālik for twenty years, and later taught Ṣahnūn. He was born in Egypt in 128 AH and died there in 191 AH.
