the very work that raised his standing and magnified his renown. If, then, it is impermissible to follow him in the field that earned him such distinction and prestige among his colleagues, how can it be permissible—let alone obligatory—to follow him in a question over which there has been so much turmoil, a question that he himself, on his death-bed, admitted he had abandoned and of which he repented (1)? Indeed, some scholars even shunned him over certain points it contained (2), such as Abu al-Qasim

(1) Ibn al-Jawzī records that the Ḥāfiẓ Abū Jaʿfar said: “I heard Abū al-Maʿālī declare: ‘I embarked upon the open sea and plunged into that which the Muslim community was forbidden to explore, all in pursuit of truth. I had long fled, throughout past ages, from taqlīd (blind imitation), and now I have turned entirely to the word of truth. You must adhere to the creed of the ancients (‘aqā’id al-ʿajā’iz), for if Truth does not embrace me with His gentle mercy, then woe to Ibn al-Juwaynī.’” See al-Muntaẓam, vol. 9, p. 19. al-Dhahabī likewise relates this incident in Siyar A‘lām al-Nubalā’, vol. 18, pp. 470–471, and al-Subkī in Ṭabaqāt, vol. 5, p. 185. al-Juwaynī’s admission on his deathbed demonstrates that the correct methodology is that derived from the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger—peace be upon him—and practiced by the Companions and the righteous Salaf, and that engagement in kalām (dialectical theology) inevitably leads to error.
(2) The doctrine that “Allah knows universals (kulliyyāt) but not particulars (juz’iyyāt).” Ibn al-Jawzī notes and criticizes this position and reports that Ibn ʿAqīl considered it a profound misguidance. See al-Muntaẓam, vol. 9, p. 19. al-Māzarī exclaimed, “I wish I could wipe it away with my blood,” and some say he never explicitly endorsed it but was implicated by it because of his belief in the endless progression (isrār al-istirāl) of the bliss of Paradise; Allah knows best. See Sharḥ al-Burhān. al-Dhahabī adds: “This was the misstep that led to Abū al-Maʿālī’s period of seclusion; Abū al-Qāsim al-Qushayrī even vowed not to speak to him. Banished for it, he lived as a recluse, devoted himself to worship and repentance—praise be to God—and ultimately returned to the Salafī approach regarding divine attributes and affirmed it.” See Siyar A‘lām al-Nubalā’, vol. 18, p. 472. al-Subkī also mentions this issue, but only to refute it.
