that He, in His very Essence, is within all existing things and not outside them. This, too, is the claim of many of the Jahmiyyah who likewise deny that He is upon the Throne, whether they say (1) that He, in His Essence, is present in every place, or say (2) that He Himself is identical with existing things, as some of the Ittihādiyyah (3) among them maintain. The Jahmiyyah who reject the belief that Allah is above His Throne, distinct from His creation, fall into several camps: some say (4) that He is neither inside the world nor outside it; others say that He is inside the world; and still others say that He is both inside it and outside it.
(1) In the original: “sawā’ an qālū…” (“whether they said…”), and the passage makes sense when the affirmative reading is restored from manuscripts S and T.
(2) The preposition “fi” (“in”) is omitted in manuscripts S and T.
(3) Ittihādiyya (unionism): the view that God is united with His creatures in the same way that water is united with milk or fire with iron, so that the existence of the Creator is identical with the existence of the creature. At its core, this doctrine entails a total negation of the Maker and the adoption of a naturalistic eternalism rather than a divine one. Its proponents include extremist Sufis and certain philosophers—such as Ibn ‘Arabi, Ibn Sab‘īn, and al-Tilimsānī, among others. See Ibn Taymiyya, Darʾ Taʿāruḍ al-ʿAql wa’l-Naql, vol. 3, p. 75; vol. 6, pp. 152–154. Ibn al-Qayyim comments: “Ittihādiyya are the advocates of waḥdat al-wujūd (Unity of Existence); for them, God—Subḥānahu— is identical with this existence, His attributes are the attributes of existence, and His speech is the speech of existence. The essence of their doctrine is the denial of any distinction and transcendence.” See Ibn Taymiyya, Mukhtaṣar al-Sawāʾiq al-Mursala, vol. 2, pp. 286–287. Muḥibb al-Dīn al-Khaṭīb adds: “It is originally a Brahmanical creed underlying the writings of Tagore, a contemporary Brahmin, and it is espoused by all the hypocrites among the atheists of East and West.” See Ibn Taymiyya’s Mukhtaṣar Minhāj al-Sunnah al-Nabawiyya, ed. al-Dhahabī (annotated by Muḥibb al-Dīn al-Khaṭīb), p. 55, note 1. The Shaykh will discuss them in greater detail on pp. 573–575.
