Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

“He is not within anything”(1) contains nothing that entails denying direction or spatial localization(2) with respect to Allah, nor does it ascribe to Him any attribute whose clear and necessary implication would be such a denial.(3) How, then, can it be sound—when the religion is perfect and complete, and when the Messenger has delivered the message in full—that this should be counted among the matters of faith and religion, yet neither Allah nor His Messenger has ever mentioned it? How can people be summoned and commanded to adopt a creed in the fundamentals of the religion that has no basis whatsoever from the one who brought the religion?(4) Is this not an explicit alteration of the faith?

Third point,(5)

I have already said to them(6): If the speaker of this statement intends by it that there is no Lord in the heavens, no God above the Throne, that Muhammad was not taken up to his Lord, and that above the universe there is nothing but sheer non-existence, then this is false and in opposition to the consensus of the salaf of the ummah and its leading scholars. This is precisely what the majority of the Jahmiyyah(7) among the inquisitorial shaykhs and their like intend; they state it openly in their speech and their writings.

Sunan Ibn Mājah, vol. 2, p. 1274, Kitāb al-Du‘ā’ (Book of Supplication) – chapter “What to invoke when taking to one’s bed” – ḥadīth no. 3873. (1) The text enclosed in parentheses is an addition found in manuscripts S and T. (2) In the original it appears as “al-hayz” (a scribal error); the corrected reading is that of S and T. (3) In S it reads “yanfī” (it negates). (4) In S: “ghayr min,” and in T: “‘amman.” (5) In this regard, Shaykh al-Islām (may God have mercy on him) refutes them on their own terms, since addressing specialists in their technical language is not blameworthy when necessary and when the meanings are sound. See: Dar’ ta’arudh al-‘aql wal-naql, vol. 1, p. 43. (6) The word “innī” is omitted in S and T. (7) The Jahmiyya were defined earlier on pp. 10 and 56.
