Anas (1) about compelling the people to adopt his Muwattaʾ, he said to him:
“Do not do that, O Commander of the Believers! The Companions of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—have scattered throughout the lands, and each community has received knowledge from those who were among them. All I have done is gather the learning of the scholars of my own city,” or words to that effect (2). And he also said

(1) In the original manuscript “s:” should read “li Malik,” but the correct reading is “ṭ” (ṭā’), which may be more appropriate. His biography appears above on p. 133.
(2) Abu Nu‘aym records in al-Hilya, vol. 6, p. 332: “From ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abd al-Hakam: I heard Malik ibn Anas say, ‘Harun al-Rashid consulted me on three matters, one of which was to suspend the Muwatta‘ in the Ka‘ba and require people to adhere to its contents… I said: O Commander of the Faithful, as for suspending the Muwatta‘ in the Ka‘ba, the Companions of the Messenger of God (may God bless him and grant him peace) differed on the legal details and dispersed to various regions—each holding to his own view, and each is correct in his own right….’”
And in al-Intiqa‘ by Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr, p. 41: “…that Malik ibn Anas said: When Abu Ja‘far al-Mansur performed the pilgrimage, he summoned me. I entered upon him; he conversed with me and asked me questions, which I answered. He said: ‘I intend to order that copies of this book of yours—the Muwatta‘—be made and a copy sent to every province of the Muslims. I will command them to act according to it, not to go beyond it, and to abandon all else….’ I replied: ‘O Commander of the Faithful, do not do this, for people have already encountered various reports, heard hadiths, transmitted narrations, and each community has adopted what reached them and judged accordingly… and forcing them away from what they believe is severe. Leave people as they are.’”
A similar report appears in Tartib al-Madarik by al-Qadi ‘Iyad, vol. 2, p. 72; and Siyar A‘lam al-Nubala’ by al-Dhahabi, vol. 8, p. 78. And in Tadhkirat al-Huffaz by al-Dhahabi, p. 209: “Isma‘il al-Qadi said: Abu Mus‘ab narrated to us, saying: I heard Malik say: ‘I entered upon Abu Ja‘far the Commander of the Faithful while he was on his bed… He asked me about certain matters, some lawful and some unlawful, then said: “By God, you are the most sober of people and the most learned of people.” I said: “No, by God, O Commander of the Faithful.” He said: “Yes—but you conceal [knowledge]. If you live long enough, I will have your words recorded as manuscripts are written.”’
