and Muʿmar (1) likewise compiled such works, as did Mālik ibn Anas (2) and Ḥammād ibn Salamah. These men are among the earliest scholars to set the religious sciences in writing (3). Ḥammād ibn Salamah authored a book on the Divine Attributes (4), just as he composed works on the other branches of knowledge. It has even been said that Mālik prepared his al-Muwaṭṭaʾ only in imitation of him, stating, “I collected this material out of fear that the Jahmiyyah (Jahmites) might mislead the people once they introduced negation and nullification.” In the same way, more than one of the leading early Imams used to gather those narrations and teach them when the Jahmiyyah innovated

(1) He was Abū ‘Urwa Muʿammar ibn Rashīd ibn Abī ʿAmr al-Azdī, the jurist and ḥāfiẓ, a scholar of Yemen. Born in Basra in 95 AH, he rose to prominence there before settling in Yemen; he was the first to compile works in that region and died in 153 AH. Among his writings is al-Jāmiʿ. As Fuat Sezgin notes in History of Arabic Literature – The Historical Codification (vol. 1/2:93): “It is a book of ḥadīth arranged by subject but not organized according to the main chapters of fiqh. … His student ʿAbd al-Razzāq transmitted this work, adding further ḥadīths and appending it to his own book al-Musannaf.” Also among his works is a Tafsīr, which, according to Sezgin in the same source, “has reached us in the recension of ʿAbd al-Razzāq….” For his biography see: al-Ṭabaqāt al-Kubrā – Ibn Saʿd, vol. 5:546; Tadhkirat al-Ḥuffāẓ – al-Dhahabī, vol. 1:190; al-Jarḥ wa al-Taʿdīl – Ibn Abī Ḥātim, vol. 4/1:255–257. (2) His biography was given above, mentioning some of his works (p. 133). (3) The text between square brackets is an addition by T. (4) Al-Dhahabī states in Tadhkirat al-Ḥuffāẓ (vol. 1:203): “He was the first to compile musannafāt together with Ibn Abī ʿUrwa.” I have found no work under that exact title in the sources at hand; it is likely part of the Sunan mentioned earlier in the biography of Ḥammād (p. 147), and it is known that he was stringent toward the innovators.
