Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

and the Haruriyyah (1) and those of their ilk; such is the constant habit of the people of misguided desires. As for the narrations over which the scholars disagree—whether regarding their transmission or their practical application—none of the disputing parties may compel the other to adopt his position without proof from the Qur’an and the Sunnah, by unanimous agreement of the Muslims. Allah, Exalted is He, says:

“If you differ about anything, refer it back to Allah and the Messenger—if you truly believe in Allah and the Last Day; that is best and yields the soundest conclusion.” (2)

Fifth aspect: Even supposing that a dispute does arise on this matter, Allah, Exalted be He, has declared: “If you differ about anything…"

His followers slandered Abu Bakr and ‘Umar, rejecting them with the words “We reject you,” whence they took their name. They claim that the imamate (imāmah) is a prescribed pillar of religion and that the imams are infallible (ma‘sūm); they further assert that most of the Companions went astray by abandoning adherence after the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, and espouse other corrupt doctrines. Muslim scholars have taken on the task of refuting these views—most notably Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyya in his Minhāj al-Sunnah al-Nabawiyyah and Shaykh Muḥammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhāb in his al-Radd ‘alā al-Rāfiḍah. (1) The Harūrīyya: a name given to the Kharijites from the place called Harūra near Kūfa. They withdrew there from ʿAlī’s army, may Allah be pleased with him, refusing to live in his city, and thus acquired the name. ʿAlī then sent Ibn ʿAbbās to debate them; most returned to the main body of Muslims, but some remained under the leadership of ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Kawāʾ al-Yashkurī and Shabath ibn Rabīʿ.
