for the prayer unless it is recited within it (1). Indeed, His words,
“All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds (2),
the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful (3),
Master of the Day of Recompense” (2),
are all verses that speak of the Divine attributes, by the unanimous agreement of the Muslims (3). Some have said that it is huwa Allahu ahad (“He is Allah, the One”). It is firmly established in the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections, on the authority of ʿĀʾisha, that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—appointed a man to lead a detachment, and he would recite to his companions and always conclude with:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called me while I was in the mosque, but I did not respond. I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I was praying.” He replied, “Did Allah not say, ‘Respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you’ (Quran 8:24)?” Then he said, “Let Me teach you a Sura that is the greatest in the Quran before you leave the mosque,” and took me by the hand. As he was about to depart, I asked, “Did you not say, ‘Let Me teach you a Sura that is the greatest in the Quran’?” He said, “Al-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi l-‘ālamīn (All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds): it is the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses and the Great Quran that has been given to me.”

At-Tirmidhī narrated from Abū ibn Ka‘b that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), in a lengthy ḥadīth, said: “By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, nothing comparable to it was revealed in the Tawrah, the Injīl, the Zabūr, or the Furqān. It is indeed the Seven Oft-Repeated Verses and the Magnificent Quran that has been given to me.”

Imam al-Bukhārī (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “It is called Umm al-Kitāb (Mother of the Book) because it is the first Sura to be written in the Mushafs and the first to be recited in prayer.”
Refer to: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, vol. 5, p. 146, Book of Tafsīr, chapter “Virtue of al-Fātiḥa.”
(1) It is established in the Ṣaḥīḥ from ‘Ubāda ibn al-Ṣāmit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “There is no prayer for he who does not recite al-Fātiḥa.”
Refer to: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, vol. 1, p. 184, Book of al-Aḍhān, chapter “Obligation of recitation for the imam and the follower.”
Shaykh al-Islām (may Allah have mercy on him) also cited this ruling in his Tafsīr of Sūrat al-Fātiḥa in Majmū‘ al-Fatāwā, vol. 14, p. 5.
