and that what exists is nothing but pure knowledge, then such a claim is false and stands in clear opposition to the consensus of the ummah and its leading scholars. If, however, he means by it that Allah is not encompassed by His creatures and is not located within created beings, this is something I have already stated explicitly in my words (1); so what benefit is there in repeating it?

As for the speaker’s remark: “He does not say that Allah’s Speech consists of letters and a sound subsisting in Him; rather, it is a meaning subsisting in His Essence,” this, too, is not found in my words (2), nor have I ever said it; rather—

It (the Ascension) is like a ladder, yet its nature is unknown; its ruling is the same as that of other unseen matters—we believe in them without delving into how. See: Taj al-ʿArūs by al-Zabidi, vol. 2, p. 72 (under “ʿArj”). The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—was taken on the Night Journey (Isra) in full wakefulness, both body and soul, from Masjid al-Haram to Masjid al-Aqsa on the Buraq, in the company of Gabriel—peace be upon him. There he descended and led the prophets in prayer, then was taken up (Mi‘raj) to the lowest heaven and through the remaining seven heavens. At each heaven the gate was opened upon his request, and he greeted the prophets there in order of their rank, until he reached the Lote Tree of the Furthest Boundary (Sidrat al-Muntaha). Then the House of the Consecrated (al-Bayt al-Ma‘mūr) was raised for him, and he was brought into the presence of the Exalted in Might (al-Jabbar), Glorified be His Majesty, drawing as close as two bows’ length or nearer. To His servant He revealed what He revealed, decreeing fifty prayers, which were then reduced step by step until they became five, in mercy and kindness to His servants. He then returned him to the Temple Mount and conveyed him back to Mecca bighuls. This event stands as evidence for affirming the attribute of elevation (ʿuluww) of Allah the Exalted to those who reflect upon it. The reports of the Night Journey and Ascension for the Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him—are mutawatir (consecutively transmitted), leaving no room for doubt or for evaluating their occurrence by reasoning alone. The proofs have been exhaustively collected in: • Ibn Kathir, Tafsir, vol. 3, pp. 2–24. • al-Ajluni, Al-Shariʿah, pp. 481–491. • Ibn Hisham, al-Isra’ wa’l-Mi‘raj, with the commentary of al-Suhayli. • Sadr al-Din al-Hanafi, Sharh al-Tahawiyyah, pp. 245–249. • al-Hakimi, Ma‘arij al-Qubul, vol. 2, pp. 452–470. (2) In the original manuscript the reading was “kalam” (“speech”); the correct reading, as given by the manuscript tradition and Majmūʿ al-Fatāwā vol. 5, p. 264, is “ṭ.”
