and by virtue of the Prophet’s—peace and blessings be upon him—intercession on behalf of the major sinners among his community (1).

For this reason, throughout the Ummah one often encounters leaders—whether princes, scholars, or others—in whom the two aspects are combined (2). Some people focus solely on his merits and praise him, out of excess and inclination, while others dwell only on his faults and condemn him, likewise out of excess and whim. Allah’s religion stands between those who go to extremes in his favor and those who are harsh toward him, and the best of all matters is the middle course (3).

From Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), in which Allah says: “Go, and whoever you find in whose heart is the weight of an atom of faith, bring him forth.” Sahih al-Bukhari, vol. 8, p. 182, Kitab al-Tawḥīd, chapter “Allah the Exalted says: ‘Some faces, that Day, will be radiant, looking at their Lord’ (Qur’an 75:22–23).” See also Sahih Muslim, vol. 1, p. 170, Kitab al-Īmān, chapter “Knowing the Way of the Vision.” The hadith no. 302 appears with the wording “Return, and whoever you find in whose heart the weight of an atom of good, bring him forth,” and elsewhere as “Depart, and bring out of it those who have in their hearts the weight of an atom or a mustard seed of faith.” Sahih al-Bukhari, vol. 8, p. 201, Kitab al-Tawḥīd, chapter “Allah the Exalted Speaks on the Day of Resurrection.” (1) As also reported in the hadith transmitted by Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “My intercession will be for the people of major sins among my ummah.” – Abu Dāwud, Sunan, vol. 5, p. 106, Kitab al-Sunnah, chapter “On Denying Intercession,” hadith 4739. – al-Tirmidhī, Sunan, vol. 4, p. 625, Kitab Sifat al-Qiyāmah, ch. 11, hadith 2435; he comments: “This is a ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ, gharib from this side.” – Ibn Mājah, Sunan, vol. 2, p. 1441, Kitab al-Zuhd, chapter “Mentioning Intercession,” hadith 4310. Al-Haythamī in Majma‘ al-Zawā’id, vol. 10, p. 378 (after citing the Anas report) adds: “It was also narrated by al-Bazzār and al-Ṭabarānī in al-Ṣaghīr and al-Awsat,” noting in their version, “Intercession was appointed only for the people of major sins among my ummah.” He observes that it includes al-Khuzraj ibn ‘Uthmān, whom Ibn Ḥibbān considered reliable while others deemed him weak; the rest of al-Bazzār’s narrators are those of the ṣaḥīḥ collections. (2) The original reading yaḥtajju (“he attests”) is a copying error. The correct reading is confirmed by manuscripts S and T. (3) In the proverb, “The best of matters is its middle course.” It is cited to illustrate adherence to moderation. See above.
