Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

who confirmed the truth of what I had related and went on to speak of Banū Tamīm (1), the forefathers of Abū Muḥammad Rizq Allah (2) ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Ḥārith. They treated him with the utmost respect, and the (3) traces (4) of the blessing (5) of that companionship became manifest in their descendants, so much so that Abū al-Khaṭṭāb al-Kalūdhānī (6)—one of their number—was counted among the adherents of his school. Ahmad al-Ḥarbī (7) was himself a direct disciple of Abū al-Khaṭṭāb.

(1) In the original manuscript (S): “li-tamīmīn.” The printed edition (T) and Tābyīn Kadhib al-Muftarī read “wa-tabyīn kadhib al-muftarī.” Shaykh Ibn Taymiyya—may Allah have mercy on him—states in his al-Fatāwā (vol. 6, p. 53) that the Tamīmiyya, exemplified by Abū al-Ḥasan, Ibn Abī al-Faḍl, and Ibn Rizq Allāh, were more inclined to refrain from affirming divine attributes, more disposed to accommodate other views, and milder in their approach. Consequently, they were followed by the Sufis, and leading Ash‘arī scholars such as al-Bāqillānī and al-Bayhaqī leaned towards them; indeed, it was the creed of Aḥmad recorded by Abū al-Faḍl that al-Bayhaqī adopted, even though these men adhere to the Sunnah. (2) The text enclosed in parentheses is an addition from the manuscripts, the printed edition (T), and Tābyīn Kadhib al-Muftarī. It identifies Abū Muḥammad Rizq Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn al-Ḥārith ibn Asad al-Tamīmī al-Ḥanbalī (d. 488 AH), a leading authority in Qurʾānic recitation and ḥadīth who studied under Qāḍī Abū ʿAlī ibn Abī Mūsā al-Hāshimī. He held preaching sessions and a legal-ruling circle at the al-Manṣūr Mosque and later at al-Qaṣr Mosque. For details, see Ibn Abī Ya‘là, Ṭabaqāt al-Ḥanābila, 2:250–251; Ibn al-Jawzī, al-Muntazam, 9:88–89; al-ʿAlīmī, al-Minhāj al-Aḥmad, 2:195–202. (3) In all manuscripts: “azhara.” The reading preserved in Tābyīn Kadhib al-Muftarī arguably suits the context better. (4) The text enclosed in parentheses is an addition from Tābyīn Kadhib al-Muftarī. (5) In the manuscripts, the printed edition (T), and Tābyīn Kadhib al-Muftarī: “tilka.” (6) He is Abū al-Khaṭṭāb Maḥfūẓ ibn Aḥmad ibn Ḥasan al-Kalludhānī al-Baghdādī al-Azjī, one of the leading authorities among the companions of Imam Aḥmad. Prolific in knowledge, pious and virtuous, he studied jurisprudence under Qāḍī Abū Ya‘là. He died in 510 AH. See Ibn Abī Ya‘là, Ṭabaqāt al-Ḥanābila, 2:258; al-Dhahabī, Siyar A‘lām al-Nubalā’, 19:348–350; Ibn Rajab, al-Dhayl ‘alā Ṭabaqāt al-Ḥanābila, 1:116–127. (7) He is Abū al-Qāsim Aḥmad ibn Ma‘ālī ibn Barakah al-Ḥarbī, a jurist and preacher who studied under Abū al-Khaṭṭāb al-Kalludhānī. He later adopted the Shāfi‘ī school, then returned to the (Hanbali) madhhab.
