We profess that Allah (1) knows what His servants do, what they will ultimately become, [all that has been] (2) and all that will be, and even what will never be—were it to exist, He knows how it would occur.
We likewise hold the duty to obey the leaders (3) and to offer sincere counsel to all Muslims.
We deem it obligatory to part company with every caller to innovation (4) and to avoid the people of vain desires. We shall present proofs for everything we have already stated (5) of our creed, as well as for what remains that we have not yet mentioned (6), addressing each chapter on its own and every point in turn.
He said: “Four will give testimony on the Day of Resurrection…” He mentioned the unborn child, the elderly man, the fool, and the one who died in the interim state, citing the proof for each. He then said: “He will take their covenants so that they may obey him, then he will send to them: ‘Enter the Fire.’” He added: “By Him in whose hand is Muhammad’s soul, if they were to enter it, it would be coolness and peace for them.
Al-Haythami notes in Majma‘ al-Zawa’id 7:216, after citing this hadith: “Al-Tabarani transmitted it with similar wording, then recorded a chain to Abu Hurayrah reporting a like version, except that at the end he said: ‘Whoever enters it will have coolness and peace, and whoever does not enter will be dragged into it.’ This is the wording of Ahmad and his companions via al-Aswad ibn Sari‘ and Abu Hurayrah, the narrators of the Sahih.”
This matter was disputed among the Salaf and the theologians. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) fully examined the issue in his book Tariq al-Hijratayn (pp. 507–529), presenting the various opinions and their advocates, reviewing their evidence, and demonstrating that they converge on the best view: that the children of polytheists will be tested on the plains of Resurrection; a messenger will be sent to each one who did not receive the call (da‘wah)—those who obey will enter Paradise and those who disobey will enter the Fire. Thus some will be in Paradise and some in the Fire. This is the position adopted by the Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him).

(1) In al-Ibana the text reads: “and we owe to Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, that…”.
(2) The words in parentheses are an addition from al-Ibana.
(3) In Tabyin Kadhb al-Muftari the reading is “fa-bitā‘ah”.
(4) In al-Ibana the reading is “ila bid‘ah”.
(5) In al-Ibana and Tabyin Kadhb al-Muftari the reading is “dhakarnahu”.
(6) In all manuscripts and in Tabyin Kadhb al-Muftari the reading is “wa-mā lam”, which al-Ibana confirms; this is likely the appropriate reading.
