Al-TisʿīniyyaIbn Taimiya

We state that Islam is broader than faith, and that not every Islam amounts to true faith (1).

We also profess (2) that He turns the hearts, and that the hearts are between two of His fingers (3) [and that He places the heavens upon a finger and the earths upon a finger, as the narration (4) from the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—relates] (5).

Furthermore, we hold that we do not declare any of the monotheists who steadfastly adhere to faith (6) to be destined for either Paradise or Hell—except for those whom the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—explicitly testified would enter Paradise. We hope for Paradise for the sinners, yet we fear that they may be punished in the Fire.

(1) In al-Ibanah: imān (in the nominative). Dr. Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān comments on the reading rafʿ imān in both manuscripts—this word having been moved to preserve the rhyme. In Tabyīn Kadhb al-Muftarī: “wa-laysa kullu al-islām li-imānihi” (“not all of islām follows one’s faith”). (2) In al-Ibanah: “b-anna Allāh taʿālā…”. (3) In al-Ibanah: “…min aṣābiʿ ar-Raḥmān” (“…from the fingers of the Merciful”). (4) Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 4:2045, Kitāb al-Qadar, chapter “How God turns the hearts as He wills,” Ḥadīth 17, reports from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger (peace be upon him) say: “Indeed, all the hearts of the children of Adam are between two fingers of the Merciful, like a single heart which He turns wherever He wills.” The Prophet then supplicated: “O Allah, Controller of the hearts, direct our hearts to Your obedience.” This hadith is also transmitted with variant wording by other Companions—see Sunan al-Tirmidhī 4:448–449, Kitāb al-Qadar, Ḥadīth 2140; Sunan Ibn Mājah 1:72 (Introduction), Ḥadīth 199; Musnad Aḥmad 2:168, 173; 6:251. Cf. also the earlier anecdote of the scribe who said: “O Muḥammad, God places the heaven on a finger and the earth on a finger…” (p. 912). (5) The material enclosed in parentheses is omitted in Tabyīn Kadhb al-Muftarī. (6) In al-Ibanah: “…min ahl al-tawḥīd wa-al-mutamassikīn” (“…from the people of monotheism and the steadfast adherents”).
