and, “Every soul—We guided it” (1); and His words, “He is the Doer of whatever He wills” (2); and His report of Shuʿayb, who said, “It is not for us to return to it unless Allah, our Lord, so wills” (3).

For this reason the Messenger of Allah—may blessings and peace be upon him—called them “the Magians of this ummah” (4): they adopted the creed of the Magians, imitated their assertions (5), and claimed, as the Magians did, that good and evil have two separate creators (6), and that some evil occurs without Allah’s will (7).

They also alleged that they hold power over benefit and harm for themselves, in defiance of Allah’s words (8): “Say: I possess no power to benefit myself or to ward off harm—except as Allah wills” (9)

(1) Surah As-Sajdah, verse 13. (2) Surah Al-Buruj, verse 16. (3) Surah Al-A‘rāf, verse 89. In al-Ibānah it reads: “... our Lord’s knowledge encompasses all things.” (4) As reported from Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “The Magians of this nation—those who deny God’s Divine Decree—if they fall ill, do not visit them; if they die, do not attend their funerals; and if you meet them, do not greet them.” This is recorded in Sunan Ibn Mājah 1/35 (Kitāb al-Qadar, hadith 92), Ash-Shari‘ah by al-Ājrūmī (p. 190), and As-Sunnah by Ibn ‘Āṣim 1/144. Al-Albānī deemed it hasan, noting that Abū az-Zubayr is a mudallis and that his isnād is broken. Supporting chains appear via Ibn ‘Umar and others. See also Sunan Abī Dāwūd 5/66–67 (Kitāb al-Sunnah, 4691–4692), Musnad Aḥmad 2/86, 125; 5/406–407; and Majma‘ az-Zawā’id (al-Haythamī) 7/205. (5) In al-Ibānah: aqāwīlahum; in Tabyīn Kidhb al-Muftarī: aqwālahum. (6) The text enclosed in brackets is an addition found in editions S and T and in al-Ibānah and Tabyīn Kidhb al-Muftarī. (7) In al-Ibānah: ashrūr (evils). (8) In al-Ibānah: li-qawl Allāh li-nabiyyihi (“for God’s saying to His Prophet”). (9) Surah Al-A‘rāf, verse 188. In the original it read darran wa-lā nafa‘an (“harmful and of no benefit”), which is erroneous.
