And the Qur’anic verses and Prophetic reports urging the command to do what is right and the prohibition of what is wrong are far too numerous to cite here.
As for removing an evil, it may be done with the hand, the tongue, or the heart, as comes in the sound hadith in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he is unable, then with his tongue; and if he is unable, then with his heart—and that is the weakest level of faith.” This was recorded by Ahmad, Muslim, and the compilers of the Sunan from the report of Abu Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him); al-Tirmidhī declared it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ.
Muslim also narrates from Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “No prophet was ever sent before me to a community except that he had among his people disciples and companions who upheld his sunnah and followed his command. Then came after them successors who said what they did not do and did what they had not been commanded. Whoever strives against them with his hand is a believer; whoever strives against them with his tongue is a believer; whoever strives against them with his heart is a believer, and beyond that there is not even a mustard-seed’s weight of faith.”
Ahmad, Abū Dāwūd, al-Tirmidhī, and Ibn Mājah likewise relate from Ibn Masʿūd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When the Children of Israel plunged into sin, their scholars forbade them but they would not desist; the scholars then sat with them in their gatherings and shared their food and drink. Thereupon Allah caused their hearts to strike one against another and cursed them on the tongue of David and Jesus, son of Mary—that was because they disobeyed and habitually transgressed.”
